How do you know your concrete needs cutting?

Most cutting jobs start as a problem in one spot, and a straight cut lets us fix that spot before it turns into tearing out a whole slab.

  1. A cracked or sunken driveway panel

One section has cracked or dropped while the rest is fine. A clean saw cut lets us take out just that piece, and waiting usually lets the damage spread.

  2. You want a doorway in a wall

You'd like a door or window through a concrete wall. That takes a wall saw and some planning first, because guessing at an opening can weaken the wall.

  3. A leak under the slab

A broken drain or new line runs under your floor or patio. A narrow, straight trench keeps the patch small, while breaking it out leaves ragged edges to patch.

  4. A lip where two slabs meet

One slab has risen or dropped against the next, and toes catch on the edge. Cutting out that section lets it be poured back level before someone trips.

  5. Water pooling toward the house

Water sits on the patio or runs toward the house. Cutting out that part and repouring it to drain away is often the fix, and waiting keeps it at your walls.

  6. A slab in the way

An old patio or driveway edge sits where you want a planter, a wider gate or an addition. A straight cut lets the rest stay put instead of redoing everything.

How we handle concrete cutting at your house

Concrete cutting in Newport Beach usually means putting a straight, clean edge where a slab or wall has to change, like one bad panel out of a driveway, a trench across a garage floor or a new doorway through a wall. Before the saw starts, we scan the slab or wall so we know what's inside before we cut into it, and if the wall carries load we wait for the engineer's call on the opening. We run the saw wet, since water keeps the blade cool and holds the dust down, then contain and vacuum up the gray slurry it makes, because the city requires construction runoff to stay out of catch basins and storm drains. What moves your price is mostly how thick the concrete is, how much steel is in it and how hard the spot is to reach, and what moves the schedule is whether an engineer or the city has to sign off before we cut, which I'll go over with you at the estimate.

Most cuts are the first half of a job. When a bad section of driveway comes out, we usually pour it back as part of our concrete driveway building work, and a cut that squares off an old slab is often where concrete patio construction starts, so the new concrete meets the old on a straight line.

Questions about cutting concrete

Here are straight answers to what people usually ask before a cut. If your job has a catch that isn't covered here, call or send the form and ask.

How much does concrete cutting cost in Newport Beach?

Cutting is priced by the job, so your number comes from the written estimate rather than a list. A thicker slab, more steel, deeper or longer cuts, a wall instead of a floor, a tight spot and pieces that need hauling all raise it, while a short, shallow cut in open slab keeps it down. I'll walk it with you and put it in writing.

What is the best way to cut a concrete driveway or patio slab?

Flat sawing is the usual way, with a walk-behind saw running a large diamond blade, and it's the most common cutting method for driveways, patios, floors and walkways. Small spots, or places where water isn't practical, can be cut dry with a hand saw that leans on the blade and a vacuum to handle the dust.

Why do you scan concrete before cutting it?

We scan because what's inside the slab decides where it's safe to cut. One field guide on cutting says to find the rebar that reinforces the slab, any post-tension cables stretched tight inside it and any live conduit before a cut, and to make no cut without a scan. A cut post-tension cable lets go of its stored tension and can collapse the slab and kill someone, so on our jobs the scan always comes before the saw.

How do I get a doorway cut into a concrete wall?

Start by finding out whether the wall is a bearing or shear wall, because a field guide on cutting notes that an opening in one changes how the wall carries load. On those walls the opening's size, location and any new frame are the engineer's call, and I'll tell you at the estimate if you need one. Once that's set, a wall saw on a track cuts the rough opening straight, and on very thick or heavily reinforced walls a wire saw may be brought in instead or alongside it.

Do I need a permit to cut concrete in Newport Beach?

Don't assume your job is exempt, because the city's list of work that can skip a permit names things like finish work, low fences and walks, not concrete cutting. The city's Building Division is the office to ask, and we find out what your job needs, pull the permits for our part and book the inspections. That matters because the city warns that insurers may not cover work done without permits and inspections.

Can you cut concrete on a Saturday in Newport Beach?

Usually yes, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., unless your home is in one of the city's High-Density Areas, where the Saturday hours don't apply. Those include Balboa Island, Balboa Peninsula, Corona Del Mar Village, Lido Isle and West Newport, so give us your address and we'll plan the cut for a weekday.
